Yihwa Kim

Data Science Tech Lead

Before joining benshi, Yihwa worked as a senior AI scientist at IQVIA, where she led the data science component of a tool that aimed to recruit patients for clinical trials more efficiently using electronic medical records (EMR). Prior to that, she was a big data consultant in Oracle, where she used natural language technologies (NLP) and machine learning-driven predictive models to develop targeted marketing campaigns for the banking sector. Yihwa also worked for start-ups in Spain and Switzerland, in both data science and engineering roles, focusing on topics ranging from multilingual sentiment analysis to demand prediction for supply chains.

Yihwa holds a PhD in computational neuroscience from the University of Bern, Switzerland, where she applied biologically found learning rules to artificial neural networks, and found their functions in the natural formation of categorical representations. She did her postdoctoral research in École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, contributing to the Blue Brain Project. This project, part of the Human Brain Project — one of the largest research programme ever funded by the EU — aims to develop algorithms, scientific processes, and software to digitally reconstruct and simulate the human brain. She has also conducted postdoctoral research at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), Japan, focusing on optimizing principles of naturally-forming branching structures — neurons from the brain and corals from the ocean — leading to a publication in Plos Comp Bio, a top journal for computational biology.

Yihwa also has a Masters in Cognitive Science, and a Bachelors in Computer Science and Engineering, both from Seoul National University in Korea.
